Ashwini Mate

Ashwini Mate is Counsel at The Freedman Firm. She previously served for over a decade as an appellate defender at the Federal Public Defender’s Office, where she briefed and argued numerous appeals and non-capital habeas petitions in the Central District of California and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ashwini has won numerous cases, including a published opinion in United States v. Shetler, 663 F.3d 1150 (9th Cir. 2011). She has also filed, and won, compassionate release motions and a clemency petition.

Ashwini received her J.D. from UCLA School of Law and her B.A. from Wesleyan University. During law school, she externed for then-district court Judge Audrey B. Collins, worked at the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights in the S.F. Bay Area, and interned at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. After law school, she continued to work for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office until obtaining her post at the Federal Public Defender’s Office.
